Allen-Bradley 1769-IQ16 Compact I/O module: 16 sinking/sourcing 24VDC inputs, 2 isolated groups, for MicroLogix 1500 and CompactLogix systems.

Product Description

Why the 1769-IQ16 Belongs in Your Spares Cradle

When a discrete input module fails, the whole line stops. The Allen-Bradley 1769-IQ16 is a Compact I/O discrete input module built to keep 24VDC field signals moving into your controller without drama. With sixteen sinking/sourcing input channels split into two independent groups of eight, it handles the everyday workhorses of a plant floor: relay auxiliary contacts, magnetic contactor feedback, thermal overload status, selector switches, and proximity sensors.

From a maintenance engineer’s view, the value is simple. You get a module that drops into a 1769 CompactLogix chassis or a MicroLogix 1500 base unit, accepts standard copper wiring, and tells you clearly when a channel is on or off. That clarity shortens troubleshooting and keeps unplanned downtime short.

Technical Specifications That Matter on the Floor

The 1769-IQ16 operates on a 24VDC sink/source voltage category. Its working input window is 10…30V DC at 30 °C (86 °F) and 10…26.4V DC at 60 °C (140 °F). That second number matters in cabinets where summer heat climbs. The OFF-state threshold sits at 5V DC and the ON-state threshold at 10V DC, so noisy signals near zero stay off and clean 24V signals register reliably.

Input delay is 8 ms. For mechanical contacts and most sensor inputs, that response is fast enough to catch a fault before the next machine cycle. The module draws 115mA at 5.1VDC from the backplane and dissipates a maximum of 3.55W (12.11 BTU per hour).

Grouping is a service-friendly feature. Channels 0–7 form group 1; channels 8–15 form group 2. Each group operates independently, so a wiring issue on one group does not blind the other. Isolation is rated at 75V DC, tested at 1697V DC for one second between inputs-to-BUS and group-to-group.

Where the 1769-IQ16 Earns Its Keep

Packaging and Material Handling

Conveyor zones, photo-eye sensors, and jam-detection switches all report through 24VDC discrete inputs. The 1769-IQ16 collects those signals and passes them to a CompactLogix controller. Two independent groups let you separate safety-adjacent status signals from process signals without adding another card.

Panel Retrofit and Legacy Support

Plants running MicroLogix 1500 or older CompactLogix racks often need a direct replacement when an input card fails. Because the 1769-IQ16 fits any location in the 1769 assembly — local I/O or an I/O bank — it is a practical drop-in for maintenance teams managing mixed-age panels.

OEM Machine Builds

Machine builders specifying CompactLogix platforms use the 1769-IQ16 for standard 24VDC sensing. The 8-module power supply distance rating means you can place it several slots from the supply, giving layout flexibility inside the enclosure.

Installation and Setup Notes

Mount the 1769-IQ16 on a panel or DIN rail. The terminal screw torque is six pounds per inch. Use copper wire rated for 90 °C: 22–14 AWG solid or 22–16 AWG stranded. The module accepts power from a 1769-PA2, 1769-PB2, 1769-PA4, or 1769-PB4 supply, and it must sit within the 8-module distance rating from that supply.

If you use a MicroLogix 1500, insert the module after the base unit or adjacent to any module following the base unit. In a CompactLogix assembly, it can go anywhere as long as the distance rating is respected. Observe the 8 ms input delay when tuning your logic — it is short, but it is real.

Maintenance and Reliability

The 1769-IQ16 has no moving parts, so wear is minimal. Focus your attention on the field wiring, terminal connections, and cabinet environment. Operating temperature is 0 to 60 °C (32 to 140 °F) at 5 to 95% relative humidity, non-condensing. Keep the enclosure within that window and the module will age slowly.

During planned outages, inspect terminal screws for looseness and check for corrosion on copper conductors. Confirm that the OFF-state voltage on idle channels stays below 5V DC. If a channel reads ON when the field device is off, suspect induced voltage or a wiring fault before replacing the module. Keep a spare 1769-IQ16 on the shelf — it is a fast swap and a cheap insurance policy against a stopped line.

Compatibility and Integration

The 1769-IQ16 works with MicroLogix 1500 and 1769 CompactLogix controllers. It communicates through the backplane of the 1769 assembly, so no separate communication cable is required beyond the 16-point connection. The replacement terminal block is 1769-RTBN18. When sourcing a spare, confirm the series — this module is available in Series A and B — and verify compatibility with your existing chassis.

What to Verify Before You Buy

Before ordering, confirm your controller platform, the number of input channels you need, and whether your field devices are sinking or sourcing. Check that your power supply is one of the supported 1769-PA2, 1769-PB2, 1769-PA4, or 1769-PB4 units. If you are replacing an existing card, note the series letter. SpareTechPLC stocks industrial automation parts and can help you confirm availability and lifecycle status before you commit.
